When something feels unresolved or the past still feels present.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) can help you process what is unresolved, so you can move forward with greater ease.

Sometimes, we know something happened in the past, yet our mind, body or emotions continue to respond as though it is happening now.

You may feel overwhelmed by certain memories, situations or emotions. You may understand intellectually that you are safe, while your body still responds as though you are not.

Sometimes, you may not even know exactly why you feel this way — only that something seems to be affecting you, holding you back or getting in the way of feeling fully yourself.

EMDR offers a gentle, evidence-based approach to processing distressing experiences, helping the past feel more like the past — so you can feel more present, more settled and freer to move forward.

EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing

How can EMDR help?

EMDR is recognised worldwide as an effective, evidence-based therapy that can help to process traumatic and distressing experiences that may continue to affect thoughts, emotions, body and everyday life.

It is widely regarded as a gold-standard treatment for trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), recommended in clinical practice guidelines and supported by extensive scientific research.

When we experience something distressing, our brain and nervous system will usually work to process the experience and store it as a memory of the past.

Sometimes, however, an experience can remain unusually vivid or emotionally charged. This can happen when the experience has not been fully processed.

EMDR provides a structured and supportive way of working with experiences that may still feel distressing or unresolved.

Rather than simply talking through what happened, EMDR works with different aspects of the experience. This might include a memory, image, emotion, belief or body sensation. Bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, is used as part of the process.

Over time, the distress and emotional intensity associated with a memory can lessen. The memory may become easier to think about, without the same emotional or physical response.

My Experience – resolving trauma with EMDR

As your counsellor and EMDR therapist, my approach is grounded in professional counselling training and advanced EMDR practice. This includes a Master of Counselling, Diploma of Counselling and Level 4 registration with the Australian Counselling Association.

EMDR is a specialised psychotherapy approach that requires additional training and clinical experience, beyond a professional degree. I have completed this specialised EMDR training and continue to build on my practice through advanced EMDR protocols and training with internationally recognised experts and trainers, including Dr Ignacio Jarero, Professor Ad de Jongh and Dr Suzy Matthijssen.

Resolving Trauma with EMDR

I am a strong believer in EMDR and have been continually amazed by the shifts it can support when working with trauma, PTSD, beliefs and other distressing experiences.

What I find particularly powerful is the way EMDR can shift how an experience is held – the memory, thoughts, feelings, emotions, patterns and behaviours connected to it.

As the experience is processed, it can begin to feel more like a distant memory with less emotional charge. For some people, this can bring a profound internal shift, loosening the hold an experience has had and allowing greater freedom to move forward.

Choosing the right EMDR therapist

When choosing an EMDR therapist, look for someone who is appropriately qualified, professionally registered, specifically trained in EMDR and experienced in trauma-informed care. Most importantly, choose someone you feel safe and comfortable with — someone who takes time to understand your needs and explain the EMDR process.

Sessions – what to expect

As your counsellor and EMDR therapist, I work with you at a pace that feels safe and supportive, gently exploring what may still be affecting you and creating space for greater calm, clarity and a sense of resolution.

EMDR sessions are collaborative, tailored to you and confidential. Before beginning EMDR processing, I take time to understand what you would like to work on and help you feel prepared and supported. When you feel ready, we can begin the EMDR processing.

You remain in control throughout. We can pause, slow down or adjust the approach whenever needed.

There are a few ways EMDR can be structured, depending on what feels right for you.

Single sessions can be weekly, fortnightly or as needed, allowing time to reflect between sessions.

Intensive EMDR involves full-day or a few consecutive days of sessions, offering focused work over a shorter period, with the potential for quicker relief.

We can discuss the options and find an approach that suits your needs and circumstances.
